Keratin is the main structural protein in hair and nails and is also present in the outer layers of the skin. Native keratin is tough, highly cross-linked and poorly soluble, which makes it difficult to use directly in cosmetic formulas.

What is hydrolyzed keratin?

Hydrolysis breaks keratin into smaller peptides and fractions containing amino acids. This makes hydrolyzed keratin easier to disperse in water and use in shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, leave-in treatments, creams and lotions.

The source may be wool, feathers or other animal materials, depending on the supplier and process. Buyers should confirm the origin and grade documentation for the intended market.

Hair care performance

Hair contains a high level of keratin. Bleach, dye, relaxers, heat, sunlight and frequent grooming can damage the cuticle, roughen the surface and increase friction, breakage and sensitivity to moisture.

Hydrolyzed keratin can deposit on the hair surface, and some smaller peptides may interact with damaged areas. Performance depends on peptide size and the finished formula. Typical effects include improved softness and manageability, light film forming and a smoother cuticle feel.

Skin and nail care

In skin care, hydrolyzed keratin is used for conditioning and film-forming effects. It can contribute a smooth after-feel in creams, lotions and serums, but formulators should support claims with appropriate finished-product testing.

Nail care formulas use keratin peptides for conditioning and surface appearance. As with hair care, the effect depends on the grade, concentration and the rest of the formula.

Formulation considerations

Check dose, pH range, compatibility with surfactants and preservatives, and the clarity required in the finished product. Peptide size affects solubility and substantivity, so compare grades rather than assuming equivalence.

WHUCHEM supplies HydroTide® hydrolyzed keratin in powder and liquid grades for hair and nail care. Samples and technical documentation are available for formulation trials.
